The tightest school catchments in England in 2026
"Catchment" sounds like a geographic boundary, but for most popular schools in 2026 it's a moving target — the distance recalculated every year based on demand. A school with a 0.4-mile catchment last year might admit from 0.6 miles this year if applications dropped, or shrink to 0.3 if the popular new local development came online.
We pulled every school in our catchment dataset and ranked by tightest 2024–25 admission distance. Some of these are dramatic enough that a parent could literally walk past the school every day and still be too far away.

What this means for your move
- A 0.3-mile catchment is a single street. If you're not on the right side of the building, the school may as well be in another postcode. Always check the last-distance-offered for the specific year you'd be applying.
- Tight catchments swing year to year. A school with a 0.4-mile catchment last year might admit from 0.7 miles this year if a popular new development came online (more applicants) or a competitor school opened nearby (fewer applicants). Don't trust one year's number.
- Tight + popular = expensive housing. Properties within a 0.3-mile radius of a famously tight Outstanding catchment carry a premium of 15–25% over the surrounding street's prices. That premium evaporates the day your child finishes Year 6.
